La Playa Project

Interior Designer: MHW (Megan Heacock White)
Architect: G. Coleman
Photographer: Drew McGill
General Contractor: M.C. Brown Construction

The La Playa project is a complete renovation of a 1984 home located in San Diego and built by architect Scott Emsley, a collaborator of the master of “organic architecture”, Kendrick Kellogg.

In this article, MHW shares the design approach for the renovation of the main house, respecting the home’s existing architectural details while modernizing it for a growing family.

To enhance the property’s sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, MHW balanced the unique original architectural details, like the ribbed concrete walls with warm, nurturing walnut and teak woods, custom framed glazing, organic textures, and soft furnishings.

Ivory glazed tiles that MHW designed for Los Angeles based firm, Commune, were used for the ten foot powder room walls.

Carefully sourced slabs of limestone were installed in the kitchen and main bathroom, along with a one-of-a-kind teak tub.

MHW kept all the lighting simple to maintain focus on the organic finishes and blue ocean views.
